About Me

Thank you kindly for visiting my portfolio. The following website is an introduction to my personal artistic work and the creative endeavors of students I have had in the past. I was incredibly fortunate to have had the experience of teaching high school and college students in a variety of media (traditional + digital) for over 12 years. For the past 7 years I have worked as an outdoor gear designer developing tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and accessories. That portfolio can be seen at my product design website.

I believe that my teaching background and the career I have had as a design professional allows me to bring a unique, “real life” perspective to the importance of an arts education. Although I have enjoyed my design work, I have sincerely missed teaching the visual arts.  I am passionate about the arts not only because the process of creation brings self-knowledge, but also because the arts encourage risk taking, divergent thinking, and empathy.  I feel that these skills are necessary to prepare young people for the challenges of the 21st century.

Anatole France once said that, “The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards.” I know that the “young minds” of my students are not the only minds that are awakened when I teach. As I guide my students in their own self-expression they provide me with a chance to see life in a fresh way… I have always wanted to feel that the time and energy I put into a job is making a difference somehow, and it is through teaching that I have found work that is incredibly fulfilling and always inspiring.

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling…  It has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”
